Divine Designs - Spitalfields
There are few spots on earth with a richer history. At the heart of London's extraordinary East End sits Spitalfields. Originally a Roman army base, outside the city walls of ancient Londinium, it became home to waves of immigrants, from Huguenots fleeing persecution in France, to Jews seeking refuge from pogroms in Europe. It is graced with the most magnificent architecture - the baroque masterpieces of Sir Nicholas Hawksmoor, and yet its dark back alleys were also the hunting ground of Jack the Ripper.
Cambridge historian Paul Binski takes us on a fascinating journey through its winding streets and reveals some of its hidden treasures.
